Our library warmly welcomes Author Railey Jane Savage for a remote reading (via Zoom) of her fascinating non-fiction book, A Century of Swindles: Ponzi Schemes, Con Men, and Fraudsters.
Between 1850 and 1950 America was bustling with ingenuity, progress, and expansion, which formed the perfect conditions for swindlers.
Swindles covers seven separate scams at work during this hundred year period, and sheds light on the con artists who are largely unheard of today, but remain the undeniable progenitors and inspirations for contemporary schemes.
Railey Jane Savage’s love for history’s forgotten moments–swindles, or otherwise–is clearly on exhibit in this masterfully researched book. She hails from Freeville, NY, and is the greenest branch on a family tree silly with writers (Rachel & Amy Dickinson, Tim Gallagher, Jan Bridgeford-Smith).
A Century of Swindles published by Lyons Press is her second book. It is available to borrow from our library and available for purchase from local booksellers and Amazon. http://lyonspress.com/books/9781493053698
