Hannah by Kelli Lage

past the cusp of witching hour / she tosses and turns / her comforter no comfort / she opens her mouth and the horizon picks up her howls / carrying them to the edge of heaven / alerted and ears perked / her childhood chocolate labrador peers down / Hannah remembers their nighttime routine / how she’d follow the girl on the tip of her heels / trusting her owner over the path of the looming darkness / how the girl would bury herself in a cocoon of sheets and pillows / and she’d embody the dozy act / burying  her head into the girl’s arms / Hannah was built for roaming / but didn’t creep toward the dim-lit hallway / until she felt the child enter dreams paved with gold / this night is no different / Hannah was built for what lies beyond rainbows  / Hannah rested her paws on the edge of the earth / counting the breaths of her old friend / slowing inching backward / as she saw painted dreams splatter over her eyelids
